The primary mission of the Wayne State University Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is to conduct research on the short- and long-term effects of environmental agents on human health.
Research pursuits within the Institute center on the characterization of the cellular, biochemical and molecular mechanisms by which environmental agents cause toxicity and initiate and/or promote disease, thereby adversely affecting human health.
Since its inception in 1986, the Institute has enhanced Wayne State University's strength in the field of toxicology and environmental health. The Institute also serves as headquarters for the interdisciplinary graduate program, offering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Molecular and Cellular Toxicology.
Dr. Raymond F. Novak is the Director and currently the Institute has twelve primary faculty members, numerous research associates and assistants, graduate students and an administrative staff. Institute faculty utilize a variety of contemporary technologies in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology and genomics in their research. The Institute maintains a substantial base of modern core facilities and scientific equipment.
Located at 2727 Second Avenue, just south of Wayne State's main campus and the Detroit Medical Center, the Institute develops new academic strengths in the areas of human environmental health and participates in other research programs at WSU and in industry. Headquartered at the Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is also the EHS Center in "Molecular and Cellular Toxicology with Human Applications", an interdisciplinary center consisting of faculty from various departments, Centers / Institutes, and Schools, which is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. |
